Red Silk Corset
During the first term of my master’s course, we had an intensive week with university tutor Hazel Jewkes focusing on corsetry construction. This particular corset was based on a Victorian pattern with a front-fastening opening, a style I hadn’t previously attempted, so I was eager to give it a try. We received advanced notice about the project, allowing us time to purchase fabric of our choice if desired. I opted for a beautiful red silk Dupion, despite its higher price, confident in its potential to create a stunning and eye-catching garment, making it a worthwhile investment. Learning from Hazel, who possesses vast knowledge of corset construction, was a true pleasure, and I thoroughly enjoyed the week. The corset was heavily reinforced with steel boning and featured lacing at the back, I decided to trim mine with black binding and add black embroidery flossing detail to match the binding trim.
