Contemporary Corsets

During my degree in costume construction at the University of South Wales, my fascination with corsetry grew exponentially. The intricate process of crafting these garments resonated deeply with me, particularly as I delved into the recreation of historical pieces from the 18th and 19th centuries. As I approached my final major project, I seized the opportunity to marry tradition with innovation by exploring contemporary interpretations of corset design. Guided by a thematic exploration centered around butterflies and beetles, I embarked on an extensive research endeavor. Visits to natural history museums and botanical gardens provided rich inspiration for colour palettes, shapes, and stylistic elements, which I thoroughly documented in a tactile sketchbook. At Cardiff Museum, I had the privilege of studying a remarkable archive of preserved scarab beetles and butterflies. This immersive experience allowed me to capture intricate details through sketches and photographs, serving as the foundation for my design concepts in embroidery, embellishments, and structural elements. With a commitment to precision and originality, I personally drafted patterns tailored to the unique measurements of my model. Furthermore, I sampled an array of materials, including sumptuous silks and premium leathers, to realize my vision. In the culmination of this design project, I handmade two couture corsets, meticulously lined and embellished, epitomizing the seamless integration of tradition and contemporary design aesthetics.
